Learn More About the NIS2 and CER Directives

In a time of increasing cyber threats and the need to protect critical infrastructure, the EU has introduced two important directives: the NIS2 Directive and the CER Directive. These directives aim to enhance the security and resilience of critical infrastructures and services across the EU.

What is the NIS2 Directive?

The NIS2 Directive (Network and Information Security Directive) is an update of the previous NIS Directive and was adopted to improve cybersecurity in the EU. The NIS2 Directive expands the scope of sectors and entities covered by security requirements and introduces stricter requirements for cybersecurity and incident reporting.

Key Points of the NIS2 Directive:

  • Expanded Scope: More sectors and entities are now covered by the directive, ensuring broader protection of critical infrastructures.
  • Stricter Requirements: Operators of critical infrastructure and essential services must implement appropriate security measures and report security incidents to the relevant authorities.
  • Implementation: Member states must implement the NIS2 Directive into national law by October 2024.

What is the CER Directive?

The CER Directive (Critical Entities Resilience Directive) focuses on enhancing the resilience of critical entities against a wide range of threats, including natural disasters, terrorist attacks, insider threats, and sabotage. This directive replaces the previous directive on European critical infrastructure.

Key Points of the CER Directive:

  • Risk Assessments: Member states must identify critical entities and ensure they conduct risk assessments and take technical, security, and organizational measures to improve their resilience.
  • Support and Guidance: Member states must provide support to critical entities to help them enhance their resilience.
  • Implementation: Member states must implement the CER Directive into national law by October 2024.

How Do the NIS2 and CER Directives Work Together?

Both directives aim to protect critical infrastructures and services, but they focus on different aspects:

  • The NIS2 Directive primarily focuses on cybersecurity and protection against cyber threats.
  • The CER Directive focuses on physical resilience and protection against a broader range of threats, including natural disasters and terrorist attacks.

By implementing both directives, member states ensure comprehensive protection of critical infrastructures and services against both cyber and physical threats.

What Does This Mean for Suppliers to Critical Infrastructure and Defense?

Companies that supply critical infrastructure and the defense sector play a crucial role in the security and stability of society. It is therefore important that these companies also secure their own facilities and systems against potential threats. By implementing robust security measures, they can protect themselves against cyberattacks, physical sabotage, leaks of classified documents and technology, and other risks that could compromise their ability to deliver vital services and products. A strong security strategy is not only necessary to meet regulatory requirements but also to maintain the trust of customers and partners. Additionally, increased physical security can help companies ensure their competitiveness by demonstrating their commitment to security and reliability, which can be a decisive factor in procurement processes and contract negotiations.

Enhance Physical Security with the Right Products

To enhance the physical security of your facilities, it is important to implement a combination of different security solutions that can protect against both unauthorized access and potential threats. Here are some of the most effective products and solutions:

  1. Surveillance Cameras: Installing surveillance cameras at strategic locations can help monitor and record activities in real-time. Modern cameras can also be integrated with analytics tools to identify suspicious behavior.
  2. Access Control Systems: These systems ensure that only authorized personnel gain access to specific areas. Access control can include card readers, biometric scanners, and PIN codes.
  3. Security Bollards: Bollards can prevent vehicles from entering secured areas. They come in various types, including fixed, removable, and automatic bollards, which can be tailored to specific security needs.
  4. Security Gates and Turnstiles: These solutions control access to buildings and ensure that only one person can pass at a time. They are ideal for high-risk areas where strict access control is needed.
  5. Bullet- and Blast-Resistant Windows, Doors, and Facades: These products are designed to withstand ballistic threats and explosions, providing extra protection against attacks. They can be installed in both new and existing buildings without compromising aesthetic appearance.
  6. Burglar-Resistant Windows and Doors: These windows and doors are equipped with extra sturdy fittings, security locks, and laminated glass, making it difficult for unauthorized persons to break in. They are ideal for both private homes and commercial buildings.
  7. Alarm and Intrusion Systems: Alarm systems can detect and alert about intrusion attempts. They can also be integrated with other security systems to provide comprehensive protection.
  8. Security Lighting: Good lighting around buildings and entrances can deter potential burglars and improve visibility for surveillance cameras.

By combining these products and solutions, you can create a robust security strategy that protects your facilities against a wide range of threats. It is always a good idea to consider reliability, quality, and operational costs when choosing security products. If these fail, facilities and systems are left vulnerable. At Damasec, we offer a wide range of security products that can be tailored to your specific needs. We collaborate with the best in the industry and can also recommend another supplier if we cannot provide what you are looking for. Damasec Introduces Soft Armour® to the Danish Market: Flexible Ballistic Protection

Damasec Physical Protection Systems is the new distributor of Soft Armour® technology in Denmark, offering cutting-edge ballistic protection solutions. Developed by Soft Armour Security AB in Sweden, this innovative system uses ceramic pellets to safeguard buildings and infrastructure against bullets and fragments from explosions. Soft Armour® can be installed in walls, providing protection in infrastructure like police stations, airports, and public buildings. It’s also ideal for securing critical infrastructure such as power stations and creating safe spaces in private homes and businesses.

Easy integration into walls, floors, or even portable solutions
Soft Armour® works by using advanced certified ceramic pellets embedded within a flexible, fabric-like material. These pellets absorb and dissipate the energy from bullets or explosions, significantly reducing the damage to the structure they are protecting. When impacted, the pellets redistribute the force, preventing penetration and offering effective protection for both people and property. The material can be integrated into walls, floors, or even portable solutions, making it ideal for police stations, military installations, and critical infrastructure.

Ideal for use in buildings where heightened protection is necessary
Soft Armour® can be installed in various ways, depending on the specific application and the structure’s requirements. Typically, it is integrated directly into walls, ceilings, or floors by embedding the ballistic material within the building’s construction. It can also be added as a retrofit to existing structures for added protection. The flexibility of the material allows it to be shaped and customized to fit different spaces.

Soft Armour® is ideal for use in buildings where heightened protection is necessary. These include:

  • Police stations: To protect against armed threats.
  • Government and military installations: Ensuring security for sensitive operations.
  • Critical infrastructure: Such as power stations, airports, and transportation hubs, where security is paramount.
  • Commercial properties: For secure vaults, data centers, and high-value assets.
  • Private homes: To create safe rooms or fortified spaces.

Its adaptability makes it suitable for both new constructions and retrofits in existing buildings.
