Car-Free Sunday creates more space for the city’s reopening

Midlertidige barrierer

The government’s proposal for car-free Sundays aims to make room for cultural events in the city. But it may also be interesting for the city’s restaurants, bars, and cafes during the reopening.

The government’s proposal for a new transport infrastructure called ‘Denmark Forward’ includes a suggestion that major cities should be able to have car-free Sundays.

Most people remember car-free Sundays from the oil crisis in 1973-1974. Now the government wants to reintroduce the phenomenon, where certain streets in individual municipalities can be completely car-free on Sundays from 9 am to 8 pm. And it might be a good idea. With car-free zones, it can create more space for the city’s restaurants and cultural life during Denmark’s reopening.

More pedestrians in urban areas

The idea is to get cars out of the city, so Danish cities like Copenhagen and Aarhus have greater opportunities to use urban space in new ways and make room for cultural activities, markets, events, and the like.

Restaurants, bars, and cafes are some of the hardest-hit by the pandemic. They might just benefit from larger outdoor dining areas, where the risk of infection is lower.

Many restaurants abroad have already invested in making it easier to meet outside with distance. In many cities like New York, it has been a popular trend because customers also feel safer.

Expertise in temporary city closurer

At Damasec Physical Protection Systems, we specialize in temporarily closing off an area for traffic and establishing pedestrian zones. This happens at major events like carnivals, music events, but it can also be at a flea market, town festival, etc., or to create more space for outdoor dining and city life during COVID-19.

Our temporary barriers and traffic solutions can easily be set up in the morning and taken down the same evening.

Damasec Physical Protection has extensive experience in advising and planning which points in the city should be closed off – including considering access routes for emergency vehicles and redirecting traffic.

The video below shows how to effectively ensure the flow of pedestrians and cyclists while blocking off vehicles.
